Pankey Institute hires a new CEO. A strange hire?
Lynn D Carlisle, DDS, July 9, 2007
The Pankey Institute just sent out this press release about their hiring of a new CEO. Tony Trujillo is a lawyer and has worked in the communications satellite industry. The grapevine says he has experience in "Branding", remote learning and international business. I have not met the new CEO, but he seems like a very strange hire. I worry about the Pankey philosophy. There are already grumblings that the Institute has gone away from the "Philosophy" over the past few years and has become just another restorative/occlusion center. There is a danger of diminution of understanding and ownership of the philosophy with each succeeding generation. It is already happening. *To my knowledge, few full time faculty have directly experienced and applied the philosophy from Dr. Pankey himself. Has the Pankey Institute lost its way?Is this hiring a result of their fear of and obsession with losing their market share to the LVI's of the dental world? Will Trujillo's legal and business orientation blind him to the "Quid Pro Quo" philosophy upon which the Institute was founded?
The new CEO has no experience with the Philosophy. He does not have it in his tissue as Dr. Pankey often said. How can he pass it on? Does he know that it is the keystone to the uniqueness and success of the Institute?

The new CEO has no experience with "the Philosophy". He does not have it in his "tissue" as Dr. Pankey often said. How can he pass it on? Does he know that it is the keystone to the uniqueness and success of the Institute? Do the people that hired him know this? On a pragmatic level, they have gone outside of health care at a very critical time. Government and insurance companies are trying to sabotage and diminish the doctor-patient relationship, which is central to relationship-based dentistry. By doing so, they hope to control and ration health care. With the new political landscape, there is again talk of universal health care. Dentistry may be included in this. Can a lawyer - someone from the communications satellite industry - lead the Pankey Institute through these critical times? We will see.
*Gary DeWood, DDS, MS, Clinical Director and head of Business Systems Development at the Institute, and Irwin Becker, DDS Director Emeritus of Education at the Institute have informed me that they experienced the Philosophy directly from Dr. Pankey in the mid 80's, so I will change my statement to "To my knowledge, few on the full time faculty have directly experienced and applied the philosophy from Dr. Pankey". It is good to know that someone on the full time faculty has heard "The Philosophy" directly from Dr. Pankey.
