A book review for dental practices. Prepare to be irritated! Buy Tom Peters' Re-imagine!
Lynn D Carlisle, DDS
I just finished reading a book that I place in my ISOC must read* category. (* Remember that any book written for the general market needs to be interpreted for a small business dental practice. Take what you feel applies and discard the rest.) It is Tom Peters' (of In Search of Excellence fame) Re-imagine!, Business Excellence in a Disruptive age, 2003, DK Ltd. It is the most irritating book I have read. I felt I was shouted at the whole time I read the book. I think Peters has A.D.D.
The book is in Technicolor language with bright red, black and blue print, exclamation marks, side bars, quotes, and photographs. He calls a spade a bleeping spade. I put it away several times, but kept picking it up again. Why did Peters write this, his 11th book? He wrote: "Because I'm pissed off! and "I'm mad as hell!" What is he pissed off and mad at?
Bankrupt business practices and petty tyrants that create absurd organizational barriers to excellence in business. He rants and raves for 343 pages about: how Muslim fundamentalists humbled the US
why the old rules of business no longer work
why destruction will rule
why white collar employment is dead
info tech changes everything
the rise of the professional service firm
why branding and good design are at the heart of excellence
why women will rule in the new business
the importance of Wowing your customers
why our public education system is failing
the attributes of the new leader
the importance of building bullet proof relationships
the boomer bonanza`About half way through the book, I started thinking "I think Peters is right. I'm pissed off at what is happening in dentistry and it's head in the sand ignorance of the importance of the spirit of caring and it's arrogance of what is happening in the real world in business. Damn it wake up!" Then, I thought "I need to rant and rave in ISOC like Peters does." His book made me mad as hell. Buy the book, prepare to be irritated; then challenged. Then think how you can apply Peters' principles in your dental practice. I will think how I can rant and rave about what is happening in and to dentistry as the mechanics and technocrats turn dentistry at Mach 1 in the wrong direction. If you have already read this book, re-read it. I will do the same.
